Each week we feature an interview with a member of the Superstar Blogging community. These interviews highlight the ups and downs faced on the road to success, illuminating helpful tips and tricks along the way. If you want to get inspired and succeed in the world of travel blogging, video, writing, or photography then consider these interviews must-read material! This week we are featuring Talek from the Business of Blogging course.

Tell us about yourself! How did you get started traveling?

I was born and raised in New York City into a family of Cuban immigrants. My mother arrived in the United States when she was pregnant with me so I guess I’ve been traveling since before I was born. We traveled back and forth from the U.S. to Cuba for years to see family so I’ve never really known what it’s like to NOT travel.

When I was about six I asked a relative where he was going. He flippantly responded, “To the end of the world.” I thought that was a real place. I became fascinated with knowing where this place was. Shortly thereafter I went looking for the end of the world, which I imagined was somewhere beyond 72nd street and Broadway, the farthest I had ever walked. To this day, I remember the way I felt that day; the excitement, the anticipation and wonder at what I would find once I reached the end of the world. I soon got tired of walking and went back home, but I never forgot the way I felt that day. I think I’ve been trying to recreate that feeling ever since.

"Travels

As a kid my family used to take me to see Mexican and Argentinian movies because they were in Spanish and no one in my family spoke English so those were the only movies we could all see together. I remember thinking the people, costumes and sights in the Mexican movies were pretty cool and imagined I’d go to Mexico someday. I eventually lived there for four years.

Growing up my mother had a travel agency. On the largest wall there was a massive map that covered the entire wall from ceiling to floor. I would stare at that map for hours imagining what life was like in different locations. Even at a very early age I just assumed I would visit these places.

I studied International Business in college and worked in the International business field my entire career. I would have studied dog grooming or astrophysics if I thought that gave me the opportunity to travel. I didn’t care too much. As long as there was a plane ticket involved, I was OK with it. Luckily, International Business involved travel AND I liked it. Eventually I lived and worked as an expat all over the world.

What sort of experiences do you usually find the most rewarding?

No matter how much I travel – and I’ve been to over 100 countries – I always feel a strong wanderlust. I’ve never felt I’ve had enough travel; the concept is inconceivable to me. One of my biggest thrills is landing in a city for the first time; to explore its streets, to smell it, to drink it all in like a thick smoothie. That is such a good feeling there should be a name for it. Another fun thing I like is to point at something in a menu written in a language I don’t understand and see what I get. I eat everything and enjoy almost everything so getting these little surprises in a restaurant is always fun.

100 countries?! Impressive! Are there any places still on your bucket list?

Places on my bucket list include Baku, Azerbaijan because I read an inspiring book on it in high school and always wanted to go. Other places I hope to visit soon are Jordan, because I’m a little obsessed with Petra, and Alaska, because my husband went and loved it. Oman and sub-Saharan Africa are up there too. Trips that I’m already planning include Southern India, because my Indian visa will expire soon, and East Africa.

In store for the next twelve months are: Maine and Canada; finally, all these Canadian bloggers convinced me to go see their beautiful country for its 150th birthday. Also in line for visits are Iceland, U.K. and TBEX in Ireland.

"Travels

Tough question, but I have to ask: are there any particularly memorable trips you’ve had?

All trips are memorable to varying degrees. Thinking back, I find that my most memorable trips don’t seem to fit any specific pattern. I love big cities like New York, London and Beijing, great cities I got to know living and working there. I love the culture they offer. But I also love nature so places like New Zealand, Northern Spain, South East Asia and South Africa always blow me away. I also enjoy underrated places that people don’t talk about as much like Cuba and Mozambique.

I assume you’ve had some misadventures during your travels…?

With all the travel I’ve done it was inevitable that sooner or later I’d encounter misadventures. I’ve gotten horribly sick in Dubrovnik, Croatia from eating unwashed fruit. Since then I wash fruit obsessively. I got dysentery in Cartagena, Colombia and dengue fever in the Dominican Republic. While under the effects of dengue fever I hallucinated a giant squirrel in a top hat and vest was tap dancing in front of me. Go figure.

I’ve had all the non-food related mishaps everyone else has had; the taxi rip-off, the surprise bill for a meal, the tourist trap. Lessons learned from those experiences resulted in what I believe is one of my key travel tips: always confirm the price of something BEFORE you agree to purchase it. These lessons also resulted in a few good blog posts.

What about safety? Have you ever felt unsafe during your travels?

I’ve frequently felt unsafe during my travels. I guess that’s part of the experience. I do my best to stay safe but honestly, I just don’t focus on it a whole lot. I’ll do the zip-lining, the whitewater rafting the extreme exploring and enjoy every minute of it.

When I travel, I normally take public transportation and/or walk everywhere so I’ve gotten lost many, many times and frequently ended up in dark streets at night but I guess so has everyone else. Once I got hopelessly lost in Beijing near the Temple of Heaven. I tried retracing my steps back to the temple so I could find a taxi stand but I just had no clue where I was. By then I was in deepest Beijing away from any tourist spot, no one spoke English, I had no phone and it was getting dark. I flagged down several taxis but no one stopped for me. After several frustrating hours, I saw a taxi stopped at a light. I ran to it, opened the door and sat in the back before anyone could stop me. I showed my hotel key to the driver who started to yell at me and motion with his hands that I should get out. I sat in the middle of the back seat, crossed my arms, shook my head “no” and kept pointing at my hotel key with the hotel address on it. I was so exhausted and stressed that I just said to myself, “if this guy wants to drag a Western woman screaming out of his car in public, so be it, but I’m not getting out.” I then pulled out a hand-full of RMB (Chinese currency) and waved it at him while pointing at my hotel key. The money I offered was more than the fare could possibly be. He got the message and drove me to my hotel.

I’ve also stayed in some pretty iffy places. In a small town in Mexico they put me in a room with no roof. It was a perfectly fine room with all the amenities just…no roof. The hotel clerk neglected to point out that the room was missing a pretty important component. Like this was something I wouldn’t have noticed. So, I got a discount and fell asleep looking up at the stars. Sometimes you just have to roll with it.

In a village in the mountains of the Dominican Republic we stayed in a room next to a discotheque where the music was so loud we decided to leave. We couldn’t find any staff to advise we were leaving so we just walked out with our stuff. People from the hotel tracked us down in the village and accused us of stiffing them. They dragged us to what they said was the police station which just looked like someone’s broken down house. Two tough looking guys came out. I remember thinking to myself, “wow, so this is how it ends?” When the situation was explained to the two men they told the hotel guys to chill and leave us alone. But boy, did I have some uncomfortable moments that night.

Another time I was in Lagos, Nigeria going from a restaurant to a club in a car with a couple of Iraqi guys. The Nigerian police stopped us at a road block and said they needed to search our car. That would have been fine but I saw they were drunk and had guns. They were setting fire to tires, engaging in rough horseplay and passing a bottle of liquor around. My companions offered them a few naira (Nigerian currency) to “buy yourselves a beer” and they let us go without searching the car.

Reading over this I imagine some people would think my travel experiences have been nothing but one string of horror story after another. Not so. The good times; the glorious, exhilarating moments when you step off a plane and the smell of a new place hits you in the face are incomparable. The first sight of a place you’ve read about for years or a meal shared with a family that couldn’t be farther from you culturally…there is nothing like that.

"Travels

Why did you make the transition from “traveler” to “blogger?” Has it been what you expected?

I could say I started blogging because I wanted to share my experiences with others. I could say I wanted to inspire other people to travel. Of course, there’s a lot of truth to that. But I really started blogging in order to create a second career that would enable me to continue traveling for as long as I possible could. Travel makes me happy. I like to be happy so I must travel. It’s a perfectly logical equation. Plus, I enjoy writing so the combination of writing and travel is perfect for me. Well, almost perfect. I really dislike the technical aspects of this business. Can’t have it all I guess.

Blogging is pretty much what I expected it would be. It’s a lot of work and I wish the blog growth was faster. It just seems to take such a long time to increase followers and page views which is what potential sponsors look at.

As I’m sure you know, travel blogging isn’t easy! What have been your best avenues for growth?

The social media that most contributes to my blog growth in order of importance are Pinterest and Facebook. I’ve invested tons of time and effort on Pinterest and although it has contributed, the growth has not been what I expected. I guess I should re-read the research I’ve done on it and fine-tune my strategy. Twitter and Instagram are negligible. Actually, I’m not even sure how to correctly use Instagram so who knows how effective it is. And I don’t have time to find out!

I’ve done lots of collaborations, some guest posts, articles. I can’t really point to one specific thing that has contributed to my blog growth except maybe a little Pinterest. My next blog growth strategy will be to connect with non-travel industries where I can be the “travel expert.” I also plan to visit TBEX in October where I hope to get advice and network with other bloggers. Recently I received good feedback on my blog from this group. I will shortly do a redesign as a result and get feedback on the new design.

What have been some of your recent blogging successes?

If I had to point to one blogging success it would have to be steady growth. My blog IS growing, although at what I consider to be a very slow pace. Maybe that’s standard. Maybe I’m too impatient. Maybe a little of both?

I had an article published in Matador Network and another in The New Worlder, a food, drink and travel magazine. Although these happy little achievements would have happened with or without the blog, they have given me a shot of optimism that others like what I write.

"Travels
